100 Solar Installs and Counting: Energy Saver App’s Solar Trial Hits a Milestone

We’ve hit a major milestone! The Energy Saver App just reached its 100th solar panel and battery installation.

The scheme, delivered in partnership with Oxfordshire County Council, SMS, and Metis, is making it easier and more affordable for residents to take advantage of clean energy. Rather than paying thousands upfront, participants pay a fixed monthly fee for a full solar and battery system – unlocking real savings and long-term benefits.

Solar savings without the upfront cost

Barbara and John Hall, from Upper Tadmarton near Banbury, were among the first to benefit from the trial.

“This scheme is just brilliant because you’re not having to pay out a big lump sum but you’re getting all the benefits.” -Mrs Hall.

On average, participating households are already saving around £300 a year on their energy bills – not to mention the carbon savings. Councillor Judy Roberts, Cabinet Member for Place, Environment and Climate Action at Oxfordshire County Council, summed it up best:

“These installations are generating significant clean electricity for Oxfordshire. They’re helping provide flexibility and enabling our residents to benefit from cheaper tariffs.”

Powered by innovation

Backed by the Net Zero Innovation Portfolio (NZIP) through the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, this project is part of a wider mission to accelerate the UK’s energy transition. The NZIP is a £1 billion government fund designed to bring low-carbon technologies to market faster, making clean energy more accessible for everyone.

Tom Woolley, Product and Strategy Director at SMS and Metis, shared his thoughts on the 100th install:

“It’s been such a fantastic partnership. To hit 100 installations is a great moment to reflect – but we’re not slowing down. With over 100 more customers already signed up, we’re making the energy transition as simple as getting a mobile phone.”

What’s next?

Over 9,000 people have now downloaded the Energy Saver App, with many exploring ways to reduce their energy use and bills. Even if you’re not selected for the solar trial, the app helps users cut gas and electricity use by at least 8% – just by offering smarter energy insights.

Looking ahead, we’re also planning to trial air source heat pump installations in select homes – another step toward a cleaner, greener Oxfordshire.

If you haven’t already, download the Energy Saver App to join the movement. Stay tuned for updates on new trials, tips, and tools to help you save energy and money at home.
